Dr. Derek Puddester is a people person. Speak with Dr. Puddester and you are the only other person in the room. Animated, energetic, forward-thinking and dedicated to physician wellness, Dr. Puddester has a singular focus: the mental health and well-being of patients and physicians.
Soon, all Canadian physicians will have full access to Dr. Puddester’s vision via a new online portal: ePhysicianHealth.com.
As Director of the Faculty Wellness Program at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Puddester’s daily work provides preventative, educational, interventional and rehabilitation services to medical students, residents and staff physicians—and now that same help will soon be available online.
“ePhysicianhealth.com is anonymous, cutting-edge and practical,” says Dr. Puddester. “Patients. Profession. Person. Too often, physicians put themselves last. This site gives physicians the chance to learn more about themselves and recognize the warning signals—before it’s too late.”
The site is divided into modules, each focusing on specific mental and physical health issues. Requiring approximately 10–15 minutes to complete, each module quickly helps physicians to identify and clarify their current physical and mental state.
Nothing is taboo. Substance use disorders, anxiety, nutrition and fitness, depression, burnout, suicide. The most personal subjects will be addressed—with real solutions and readily available resources, accessible to all Canadian physicians at the click of a mouse.
